Waterjet Cutting & Trimming Technology For MSA

Specialists in conversion and machining of composite core materials Wimborne based MSA Manufacturing have recently invested in two new CNC Machining Centres, both have five axes capability and both have been supplied by Nottingham based CMS Industries.

MSA service the automotive, aviation and marine sectors, a key objective for the Company is the constant drive to improve productivity and reduce overall net cost for new and existing customer base.

CMS Tecnocut Waterjet
Offering a high degree of flexibility, the first machine to be installed as part of the continuous development plan at MSA was the Technocut Idra CNC waterjet. This large capacity abrasive waterjet cutting machine is capable of cutting a wide variety of materials including composite, marble, glass, steel and plastic accurately and efficiently.

The Tecnocut designed pressure intensifier with parallel cylinder technology delivering almost constant pressure at the point of cut together with the Tecnocut designed five axis cutting head and intelligent kerf compensation software for efficient handling of the head incline when cutting, ensure a high
quality edge finish is achieved.

CMS Five axis Athena CNC Machine Centre
From the CMS Plast division MSA have chosen to install the Athena Five Axis CNC Machine centre. Once again a large capacity machine the Athena has five axis of simultaneous movement.

Designed specifically for trimming complex formed components, the Athena offers the ability to process a wide variety of non ferrous materials including carbon fibre, honeycomb, model block, plastic and aluminium materials.

The Athena has a working envelope of X axis 3000mm Y axis 1500mm with a choice of either 800mm of 1200mm on the Z axis. The axes movement is made via precision rack and pinion offering maximum positioning speeds of  90 m/min.

The rotary gearbox assemblies on the B & C axis give the Athena the flexibility to work in either 3+2 or full five axis simultaneous mode, the powerful spindle operates at up to 27,000 rpm and is fitted with either 6 or 12 position automatic tool change system

CMS Powerarm software comes as standard simplifying the programming of the machine allowing digitised points from  a sample component to be turned quickly and easily into a program to drive the machine
