ORACLE Racing AC 45 manufactured on CMS ARES
CMS is Official Supplier of ORACLE Racing for the AC 34th
With the sale of a CNC machining centre model Poseidon, CMS has again renewed its cooperation with the prestigious sailing team, winner of the last America’s Cup.
During 33rd America’s Cup ORACLE Racing employed the CMS technology for the manufacture of composite-material parts of the winning trimaran, specifically its wing-sail, the largest boat part ever built and the most important innovation introduced in the sailing world.
The wing production is a field of machining expected to expand dramatically over the next years, giving the pioneers a strong position in this technological field. Constructed primarily from carbonfibre and Kevlar, with an overall skin over the frame, the wing-sail can be trimmed much more easily than the traditional soft sail: a great advantage in terms of a quicker and a much more precise trimming.
The Ares delivered in 2009 manufactured the ORACLE Racing AC 45, the high-tech carbon fibre wing-sailed catamaran class, conceived for the America’s Cup World Series circuit, the competitions that will train the America’s Cup community with the new AC rules.
The ORACLE Racing AC 45 had to be robust enough to sail through a wide wind range, from 5 to 30 knots, as well assurvive in the event of collisions. Utilizing the same technology used in the aerospace industry, the hulls are built in carbon epoxy with honeycomb cores, making them extremely stiff and lightstructures. The sandwich construction involves two carbon skinsless than 1 mm thick laminated over an ultra-light honeycomb core.
The Posedon ordered by the team will manufacture the ORACLE Racing AC 72, the 72-foot catamaran that in the 2013 will defend the America’s Cup in San Francisco .
